- About SpeakIt
-
- Some poets insist that the written word can't convey as much meaning as
- the spoken word. Some even insist that their verse should only be spoken,
- never published. Well here's the perfect solution: a public domain voice
- synthesizer called "SpeakIt" ("ab.speak" on MAUG).
-
- SpeakIt's code features several commands that control inflection
- syllable by syllable. The "ABC's" is a good example of its use. It takes
- some practice to create the sounds you want, like learning to talk. The
- inflection commands go before the sound they modify. The volume ("V#"),
- speed, ("S#"), and pitch ("#" only) settings remain in effect until
- respecified. So do base ("B"), treble ("T") and the "/" and "\" commands,
- which raise and lower the volume by one step.
-
- You can type the commands directly into Window "A", or you can use
- Mockwrite to enter the text. You can save these as a template. These
- templates can be opened from within the "SpeakIt" application by clicking
- Open A. Speakit can recite passages which are too long to fit in the
- window. Select a poem, then click Speak A and sit back for your own private
- reading.
